Open positions

  • PhD student (1 position, August 2027 intake; deadline 30 November 2026)

Research directions

  • Supply chains of renewable energy technologies and AI infrastructure (e.g. solar PV, batteries, data centres) and the materials behind them
  • Energy trade networks: how energy and energy technologies are traded, and how these networks respond to disruption and policy
  • Other topics you find interesting and relevant to the lab’s work

Specific topics are shaped together through discussion, based on your interests. The lab has rich datasets and ongoing projects to build on.

PhD student

  • Admission is through the PhD in Asian Urbanisms at the College of Integrative Studies. Intake is in August 2027, and SMU applications are open 1 August to 31 December 2026.
  • Admitted students are considered for the SMU Research Scholarship, which covers tuition and provides a monthly stipend for the first four years.
  • Please contact us by 30 November 2026 so we can discuss fit before you submit the formal application. The programme’s own admission requirements also apply.

Research assistant

  • Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or be currently enrolled in a Master’s programme. The contract is for 6 or 12 months; a part-time arrangement may be considered. Final terms follow SMU HR policies.
  • Research assistants who perform well will receive priority consideration if they wish to stay with the lab, and may receive a letter of recommendation.

Visiting students

  • We host visiting PhD students and research interns funded by the CSC or their home university. Remote arrangements are possible.
  • The lab does not provide funding for visiting positions.

Who we are looking for

  • Any background is welcome. Interest and motivation matter most; please explain clearly why this lab and these questions.
  • Working skills in at least two of: Python, R or MATLAB; agent-based modelling; network analysis; optimisation; energy-system modelling; material flow analysis; life cycle assessment; input–output analysis.
  • Preferably a research project (published or not) or a code portfolio you can show us.
  • Self-motivated: you set your own direction and drive your work forward. We meet regularly; before each meeting, you prepare a short summary of what’s done, questions to discuss, and next steps.

PhD applicants should also include a GRE score and a research proposal.
